Tommy Lee Jones
You shivered at his portrayal of creepy Clay Shaw in 1991's JFK; you laughed gleefully at him as Two-Face in 1995's Batman Forever; you cheered him and sidekick Will Smith on as they saved the planet in 1997's Men in Black. Next up? A role in Space Cowboys, a Clint Eastwood film about astronauts on their last ride through space. But even though he's gotten the most roles and press in the past ten years, Texan actor Tommy Lee Jones was putting in finely honed performances for more than twenty years before breaking through Hollywood's glass ceiling in 1993 with his role as U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard in The Fugitive. That year Jones stole the film from its star, Harrison Ford; he even wrote some of his own dialogue and ended up taking home a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award. Jones has brought some vastly different characters to vivid life in such films as River Rat (you probably missed it but it's well worth a watch), The Coal Miner's Daughter and The Executioner's Song. There is some connection among all his characters, however; as different as they've been, they're all dark in some way -- troubled, searching, running from something or someone, they are characters with something to hide and something to learn. Is Jones just attracted to this type of role, or is he bringing something of himself to the characters he portrays? Probably a bit of both. He is a real paradox: a former football star who graduated cum laude with a B.A. in English Literature from Harvard (where he roomed with longtime close friend, former Vice President Al Gore); a prolific, accomplished actor who eschews Hollywood in favor of a ranch in his native San Saba, Texas ... and the paradoxes continue in his Astrological chart. After two failed marriages, Jones married his longtime companion in March of 2001. Will this union work out better than the last two? Let's ask the *Stars* and see if they can help to illuminate this complex man ... Birth Details: September 15, 1946 San Saba, TexasBorn under an exacting, perfectionistic and ultra-critical Virgo Sun, Jones's acting chops and his academic accomplishments are no surprise. His Virgo Sun pushes him to hold himself to the same high standards to which he most likely holds everyone in his life. Virgo is an Earth Sign, and Virgos are typically practical, detail-oriented and analytical in the extreme. This is a good Sun placement for a serious actor, but would also suit an accountant, a public health worker or anyone else in a position requiring an analytical mind and a grounded approach to problems. His Mercury, the Planet of Communication, also lies in Virgo; this lends him very efficient planning capabilities and a practical nature. Jones most likely sees acting as both an art to be honed and a business in which to excel, and he definitely does both. He is an extremely direct communicator as well; when asked once how he is affected by the lack of privacy afforded by fame, he replied, 'You have some privacy in your life. Imagine if it were to go away. That's the answer to your question.' What really fuel his acting drive and ability are his Mars, the Passion Planet, and Jupiter, the Planet of Luck, both in Libra, the Sign of Partnership. Those with Mars and Jupiter in Libra are most productive when working with others; Jones experiences his greatest gains and benefits from partnerships, both in business (working closely with directors and other actors) and marriage. Though his first two attempts at the latter ended in failure, perhaps his third marriage, to photographer Dawn Maria Laurel, will end up working out better. Until his spring-of-2001 wedding, Jones's love life seemed to be unstable at best, judging by his two divorces and his hermitic ways. His Moon, which rules the emotions, is in steady, domestic, consistent Taurus, which does point to a desire to commit. However, his Venus, Planet of Love, in sex-oriented Scorpio, a Water Sign, surely complicates his love life. Those with this placement make quite intense lovers. They have very dominant sex drives, are quite passionate and can become resentful and vindictive in the extreme if crossed by a lover. Jones also has Venus Square both Saturn and Pluto in his chart, which most likely furthers his sexual desires and intensity. Those with these aspects in their charts generally aren't very physically demonstrative or affectionate; their social or romantic expression may be limited. They tend to dominate in a marriage and, if they can't divert their excessive sexual energies into some sort of creative outlet, they might run into trouble. Good thing Jones has something as intense and time-consuming as acting to help keep him in the clear! His Saturn, Planet of Karma, lies in fiery Leo in his chart. This placement points to Jones's ego, which can get in the way of his karmic progress in life. His Jupiter is also Square Saturn. If Jones is going to make any karmic headway, he's going to have to work extra hard; this aspect makes any progress in self-development especially difficult. In terms of reincarnation, then, Jones most likely isn't running his last lap on this earth; he's got a few more lifetimes to go, in which he will work on learning to be less selfish. Uranus is the Planet of Rebellion; Jones's Uranus lies in Gemini, an Air Sign. This placement enhances his ingenuity -- no surprise in a man who won scholarships to attend prestigious St. Mark's Academy for high school and then the far more distinguished Harvard University for college. The fact that Jones has an extremely good head on his shoulders is old news. What's interesting is what he does with it. His Sun is Square Uranus, which means he has extremely rebellious tendencies. He likes to work outside the bounds so much that he can become erratic and illogical, which can be an obstacle to his ambitions. As much as Jones has going for him, as many positive aspects as there are in his birth chart, there are several hindering, potentially negative aspects that he must learn to work through. Clearly, he's a man with a mission in life, one which his Saturn helps identify, as does his choice to become a big-time, highly-paid Hollywood actor: the lesson of selflessness. The good thing? He's definitely smart enough to figure it all out. Sources: www.mrshowbiz.com, www.imdb.com
