A natural performer, Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid, Spain to Encarna and Eduardo Cruz Sanchez. She studied ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory and later switched to acting. After appearing in several Spanish TV shows, as well as a number of music videos, she broke into film in The Greek Labyrinth (1993). She had a small role in Timothy Dalton's Framed (1992) and earned further credibility with a part in Belle Époque (1992).
