Owen Cunningham Wilson was born in Dallas, Texas, to Robert and Laura Wilson. He has two brothers, Andrew and Luke. He went to St. Mark's Academy and Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas, then transferred to a military academy in New Mexico.

Owen majored in English at the University of Texas at Austin but never graduated. While in college he met Wes Anderson, with whom he penned the screenplay, Bottle Rocket. Their script was first made into an 8-minute short, then in 1996 into a full-length movie.
