Nicole Camille Richie was born in Berkeley, California. She was adopted by Lionel Richie and Brenda Harvey-Richie. Her godfather is Michael Jackson.

Nicole attended The Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California with her friend Paris Hilton. According to the school's website, 'Dr. Buckley's goal was to create an educational experience that would develop the whole child. Her Four-Fold Plan of Education -- which gives equal weight to academic training, creative self-expression, physical development and moral education -- is designed to foster in each student the essential qualities of a well-rounded individual.' Nicole graduated from Montclair College Prep School.

She attended college for two years and then left, explaining 'I went to the University of Arizona. I stopped because I went there for two years and I felt like I experienced college or whatever. I'm over it. I like Hollywood better.'
