Born in Uvalde, Texas, Matthew David McConaughey grew up in Longview, Texas. He has two older brothers. His mother, Mary Kathlene 'Kay' McCabe, was a teacher. His father, James Donald McConaughey, who passed away in 1992, once played football for the Green Bay Packers and then moved into the gas and oil business. Matthew graduated from Longview High School in 1988 and then headed for Australia.

Returning to the States a year later with an Australian accent, he attended the University of Texas in Austin. He decided to major in film and in 1991 began his career, acting in student productions. In 1992, he directed a short film, entitled Chicano Chariots. His first paid gig was a beer ad.

Matthew met director Richard Linklater in Austin, Texas. Linklater cast him in his 1993 movie, Dazed and Confused in a role that got bigger and bigger the more Matt improvised. One of his best-known lines from the film is the memorable, 'That's what I like about high school girls: I keep getting older, they stay the same age.'
