Kevin Kline

Kevin Kline
October 24, 1947
St. Louis, Missouri

This Libra works hard to find a perfect balance between family and show business.

'I've never felt completely satisfied with what I've done. I tend to see things too critically. I'm trying to get over that. I've got the Jewish guilt and the Irish shame and it's a hell of a job distinguishing which is which.'

Kevin Kline's Tarot Reading

Kevin Delaney Kline is the son of Peggy Delaney and Robert Joseph Kline. His father, a German Jewish agnostic, ran a record and toy store, but it was his mother, an Irish Catholic, who was the 'dramatic, theatrical character' in the family. He has two younger brothers, Alex and Christopher, and an older sister, producer Kate Kline May. In 1965, he graduated from St. Louis Priory School. Today, the theater at the school is named in his honor. In 1970 he graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Theatre. From there he went, on a scholarship, to the prestigious Julliard School in New York City. In 1972, he and other classmates from Julliard helped create The City Center Acting Company under the guidance of English actor, John Houseman. In 1978, he won the first of two Tony awards: Best Actor in a Featured Role (Musical) for his portrayal of Bruce Granit in On the Twentieth Century. He won the second in 1981 for Best Actor (Musical) for his role as The Pirate King in the New York Shakespeare Festival's Central Park production of The Pirates of Penzance. His film debut was a recreation of his Pirate King role for the movie version of The Pirates of Penzance (1983). He appeared in many Shakespeare Festival productions and in 2004 was nominated as Best Actor (Play) for his role as Sir John Falstaff in Shakespeare's Henry IV. His film career began in earnest in Sophie's Choice (1982). He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as Nathan opposite Meryl Streep's Sophie, as well as a BAFTA Award for best debut performance.

He has appeared in a multitude of other films since then, including The Big Chill (1983), Silverado (1985), and Cry Freedom (1987). He won an Academy Award for his part in A Fish Called Wanda (1988), making him one of a handful of actors to receive an Oscar for a comedy. Following that came The January Man (1989), I Love You to Death (1990), Soapdish (1991), Grand Canyon (1991), Consenting Adults (1992), Chaplin (1992), Dave (1993), The Nutcracker (1993), Princess Caraboo (1994), French Kiss (1995), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), The Ice Storm (1997), Fierce Creatures (1997), In and Out (1997), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) and he wrapped up the 20th Century with Wild Wild West (1999) as U.S. Marshal Artemus 'Artie' Gordon. More recent films include The Road to El Dorado (2000), The Anniversary Party (2001), Life as a House (2001) and The Emperor's Club (2002). He appeared in De-Lovely (2005) as Cole Porter, The Pink Panther (2006) as Chief Inspector Dreyfus and in A Prairie Home Companion (2006) as Guy Noir. His most recent roles were in As You Like It (2006) and Trade (2007).

Sun in Libra means that harmony and balance are Kevin's keynotes. He instinctively understands the need to accommodate other people's interests and desires. He is always willing to meet the other person half way. Fairness and equality, both in his personal life and in the world, are extremely important to him. If he fights about anything, it's about something he feels is unfair and unbalanced. He is very idealistic and romantic about love and puts a great deal of energy into his relationships. He needs a partner who is his equal intellectually, someone who is capable of a mental, physical and emotional connection. Relationships are like an art to him, an art that requires time, attention and creative effort.

Mercury in Scorpio tells us he has good mental concentration and the ability to become completely immersed in his work. He seems to know things at an instinctive, nonverbal level and prefers learning through direct experience rather than vicariously through books. He has mechanical ability and works well with his hands. He also has an instinctive rapport with animals and may feel he relates better to them than to people. He tends to become narrowly focused on his own specialized interests and may not have much to say or communicate outside that field. He is optimistic, has a sense of humor and loves to entertain. He does everything in a loving way and considers love a key enrichment of his life. Just thinking of future happiness in love seems to make him happy.

Venus in Scorpio tells us that he desires a deep, intense, passionate union with his beloved. He can be very demanding with his love partner and tends to be somewhat suspicious even of platonic relationships. On March 5, 1989 he and actress Phoebe Cates were married. They have three children, Owen, Greta and Autumn. Venus square Pluto suggests that power struggles or possessiveness can become areas of conflict. On the positive side, he can be unusually creative and bring about beneficial and healing changes in the lives of others, motivated by his own deeply felt love. Kevin is a tireless worker on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as a result of his own son's struggle with the illness. At the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International Children's Congress in 2001, he said, 'It is these children we must admire .... Their honesty and bravery are models for us all. Their stories and their role here today -- advocating for their cure, their own future -- must be heard.'

Mars in Leo makes him proud and ambitious. He strives to excel, to stand out and be recognized for who and what he is. He has a strong ego drive and likes to be number one. He finds it difficult to take orders or to stay in the background and he hates being wrong. He is strong, energetic, determined and highly competitive. He plays hard, plays to win, and does not give up easily. In fact, he sees life as a competitive sport. He loves admiration and applause and has a strong sense of integrity. He tends to be very self-confident, even arrogant. Because of his belief in himself, he is able to accomplish much, but if his confidence is ever undermined, he can become self-conscious and defensive.

Jupiter in Sagittarius suggests his strength lies in his ability to see the whole, rather than the parts which compose it. He has a deep need to explore the world and to develop his own philosophy of life. He vacillates between being open-minded and tolerant of differing views and being dogmatic about his own viewpoint.

'I think every American actor wants to be a movie star. But I never wanted to do stupid movies, I wanted to do films. I vowed I would never do a commercial or a soap opera -- both of which I did as soon as I left the Acting Company and was starving.'
