Kate Elizabeth Winslet was born into a family of actors, including her parents, Roger and Sally Winslet, her grandparents Oliver and Linda Bridges, and her uncle Robert Bridges. She has two sisters, Anna and Beth, who are both actresses, and a brother, Joss. She began her career at age 11 as a dancer in a cereal commercial. Drama school at Redroofs in Maidenhead the same year put her firmly on her acting path.

About her upbringing she states, 'Mum and dad were very much friends, and up to life. There was no anxiety for anything when I was growing up; they just taught me to be me.'

She got her first film role in Heavenly Creatures (1994) when she was 17. It was based on the 'true story of two fantasy-gripped girls who commit a brutal murder.' As Kate recalls, 'I was reading the script in the back of the car and I turned to my dad and yelled, I've got to get this!' And he replied, 'Then you will.' And I thought, 'Yep, that's it. She won a British Academy Award plus an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility (1995). Her performances in Jude (1996) and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1996) set her up for the part of Rose in James (1997) opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.

Kate has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Sara Pierce, 'A discontented wife and mother whose affair with a neighbor may destroy both their marriages' in Little Children (2006).

This is her fifth Academy Award nomination. She is the youngest actress to receive so many. She was previously up for Best Lead Actress for Titanic (1997) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Sense and Sensibility (1995) and Iris (2001).
