Flea's Tarot Reading

Michael Peter Balzary, known as Flea, was born in Melbourne, Australia. In 1967 he moved to New York with his his sister Karen and their parents, Patricia and Mick, who were divorced a few years later. His mother re-married and moved him and Karen to Los Angeles. His early musical influences included his step-father, jazz musician Walter Urban Jr., who introduced him to the works of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and Dizzy Gillespie. He started out playing drums, but switched to the trumpet because of his love of Gillespie's music. His mother created an opportunity for him to actually meet Gillespie in person, much to his delight. In no time he was playing trumpet for the Los Angeles Junior Philharmonic Orchestra, and later garnered the position of first trumpet in the Fairfax High School orchestra.

In school he made a couple of friends who were also into music -- Anthony Kiedis and Hillel Slovak -- who turned him on to funk and rock, most notably Jimi Hendrix. Slovak, who was already in a band called Anthym, introduced Flea to his band mate, drummer Jack Irons and Flea switched instruments once again -- this time to bass guitar. Flea joined Anthym as bass guitarist and in 1983 Kiedis, Irons, Slovak and Flea created the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Sun in Libra means that fairness and balance are central to his being. A natural mediator, he seeks harmony in all things. He instinctively adapts to other people's needs, always looking for the middle ground. He is into collaboration and teamwork. Going it alone seems abnormal to him as he has a strong need for partnership as well as intimate relationships.

Putting a lot of stock in love, he tends to be romantic, idealistic and possibly unrealistic about personal relationships. He wants an intellectual equal, someone capable of a mental as well as a physical and emotional connection. He is an unselfish, caring partner who believes that love is an art requiring time, attention and creative effort. He appreciates a mate who is delicate and refined.

Justice and equality, both in his personal life and in the world, are extremely important to Flea. If he battles over anything, it would be over something he considers unfair. Very socially aware, balance is vital to him; he abhors intolerance and prejudice of any sort. In fact, Flea has played trumpet to benefit Axis of Justice, a 'non-profit organization formed by Tom Morello of Audioslave and Serj Tankian of System of a Down. Its purpose is to bring together musicians, fans of music, and grassroots political organizations to fight for social justice,' according to the group's website.

He is charming, has a natural sense of style and grace, and a strong need for pleasant surroundings. Working with other people in an artistic field is fulfilling to him. In 1984, he added acting to his repertoire, appearing in Penelope Spheeris' punk classic, Suburbia as Mike B. The Flea. He also appeared in My Own Private Idaho, The Big Lebowski, The Blue Iguana, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Back to the Future Parts II and III and the remake of Psycho, among other films.

Mercury in Libra reiterates that he has the ability to see both sides of an issue and to work towards unity and accord among disparate elements or people. Objective, diplomatic and discreet, he works very well with people in business and on a personal level.

Mercury trine Saturn means that he possesses excellent powers of concentration and enjoys studying or thinking in solitude. Perceptive and highly rational, he gets right down to the fundamentals in any discussion and is quick to spot weakness in another's logic. Uranus conjunct Mercury/Mars indicates that he may act with haste -- and without thinking things through very carefully.

Venus in Scorpio reveals that he can be very demanding with his love partner. While he is attracted to people with a certain mystery about them, he also is inclined to be suspicious of any other friendships they may have, no matter how innocent or platonic. In June of 1988 he married Loesha Zeviar. They have a daughter, Clara, born on September 16, 1988. Clara is in the class of 2010 at Bennington College. Flea and Loesha were divorced in 1990. He and model Frankie Rayder have been engaged since January of 2005, and also have a daughter, Sunny Bebop Balzary, born October 26th, 2005.

Mars in Leo dictates that he is proud and ambitious. He has a powerful ego and is always striving to be recognized for who and what he is. He isn't into taking orders from anyone and absolutely hates being wrong. Highly competitive, he does not give up easily. He loves applause but has a strong sense of personal honor and integrity as well. Very self-confident, he is able to accomplish a lot, but if his confidence is undermined, he can become defensive and confrontational. On the positive side, he is capable of enormous patience, endurance and quiet, steady efforts to attain his goals.

Jupiter in Pisces indicates that his considerable compassion makes him unwilling to take advantage of or harm anyone. He wants to protect the underdog. A dedicated supporter of school music programs, especially art conservatory schools, Flea, Pete Weiss and Keith Barry co-founded the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, located in a tough Los Angeles neighborhood 'to fill a void in the cultural landscape of our community.' The Conservatory offers low cost private lessons as well as scholarships to kids in need, endowing them with free lessons and instruments.

Jupiter opposition Uranus suggests that his upbeat attitude generates many opportunities for him. He enjoys being spontaneous and taking risks and must have a great deal of personal freedom. His sense of humor enables him to make it through the rough spots and to bounce back from adversity. On June 25, 1988 Hillel Slovak died from a heroin overdose. Band mate Jack Irons suffered multiple nervous breakdowns because of it and wound up leaving the band. All that was left of the Red Hot Chili Peppers was Anthony Kiedis, who got off drugs himself because of Hillel's death, and Flea. Drummer Chad Smith joined the Peppers in 1989 and Anthony recruited guitarist John Frusciante around the same time. Since then Frusciante has left and rejoined the band. Says Flea, 'It's the same band that we had before with John, but obviously we've grown as people and musicians and especially when we write music the way we do, which is an unstructured thing that relies on emotion and intuition and spirit .... With John, that's what we're doing, is trying to channel the energy that's all around us. The energy that's around us now is different from the energy that was around us seven years ago.'

Saturn in Aquarius gives him an innate distrust of groups and a cynical attitude toward society. Overcoming a sense of alienation is an important task for him. With Saturn quincunx Uranus, the side of him that needs structure and a disciplined way of life is in conflict with his need for freedom. This can cause a great deal of tension and at times he may find it hard to relax. N. Node conjunct Mars makes him a warrior with a healthy fighting spirit who is learning to appreciate conflict and confrontation as a way to grow. This comes across dramatically in the song, 'Fight Like a Brave' from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1987 album, The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.

All you slingers and fiends
Hide behind your rocks
Put down your guard
I'm not here to box
This is no showdown
So throw down your guns
You see it doesn't matter
Where you come from
You could be from Park Ave.
Or from a park bench
You could be a politician
Or a bitchy princess
But if you're lookin' for a fist
And you're lookin' to unite
Put your knuckleheads together
Make a fist and fight
Not to your death
And not to your grave
I'm talking about that freedom
Fight like a brave

Fight like a brave
Don't be a slave
No one can tell you
You've got to be afraid.
