Debbie ReynoldsDebbie Reynolds This Aries is America's Sweetheart. 'Singin' in the Rain and childbirth were the two hardest things I ever had to do in my life.' Debbie Reynolds's Tarot Reading Mary Frances Reynolds was born in Texas to Maxene Harmon and Raymond Francis Reynolds. She has an older brother named Bill. Forced by the Depression to move in with his wife's parents, her father found a job in Southern California in 1939 and moved his family there. The next year they built their own home in Burbank. She attended public school and did well in sports and music, playing French horn and twirling baton. She was also an enthusiastic Girl Scout. When she was 16 she entered the 1948 Miss Burbank beauty contest and won. Two of the pageant's judges happened to be talent scouts from MGM and Warner Brothers. Winning a coin toss, the Warner Brothers scout gave her a screen test and signed her to a contract. According to IMdb.com, Jack Warner changed her name from Mary Frances to Debbie. She continued her education at nearby John Burroughs High School in Burbank. Warner Brothers cast her as an extra in June Bride (1948) and gave her a small part in The Daughter of Rosie O'Grady (1949). When MGM reiterated their interest in working with her, Warner Brothers didn't renew their option and Debbie switched studios. She appeared in Three Little Words (1950) with Fred Astaire and Red Skelton and then signed a seven-year contract with MGM. In 1951 Gene Kelly requested her for Singin' in the Rain. Although she had not been a dancer before, she became one to perform with Kelly in this classic musical that would be her big career breakthrough. Her role in MGM/Cinerama's How the West Was Won (1962) gained her further distinction and she received an Oscar nomination for her lead role in The Unsinkable Molly Brown (1964). Decades later, when she saw that Hollywood's golden era was disappearing, she decided to help preserve it. In 1970 she added a thousand pieces of movie memorabilia bought at an MGM auction to her already extensive collection. In 1972 she formed a non-profit corporation -- another step towards realizing her long-held dream of creating her Hollywood Motion Picture Museum. With more than 3000 costumes and 46,000 square-feet of props and equipment, Debbie and her two offspring, Carrie and Todd, have almost completed the museum on Belle Island Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Sun in Aries means she loves action and is always ready to stir things up. She is not afraid to try something that's never been done. She initiates things that others will later emulate. Taking risks and following her own star are the breath of life for her, and she either wilts or gets angry if she is hindered. She is spontaneous, enthusiastic and assertive. She believes in the power of positive thinking and positive action and thinks of herself as a strong person -- even unsinkable. Accepting her own limitations and emotional needs can be difficult for her. Mercury in Aries makes her outspoken and direct. She is always eager to express her opinions and doesn't mind stirring up a little controversy. She has fresh, original ideas and much enthusiasm for anything new. She never seems to have enough time to do all she wants to. She speaks decisively and convincingly about things she believes in. Venus in Taurus promises that in love, she is steadfast and loyal, especially if she has a warm, demonstrative partner. She is very sensual, needing lots of touching and physical affection. She enjoys being pampered and is a wonderful lover -- very attentive to the comfort and enjoyment of her beloved. She is tremendously responsive to beauty; her partner's physical appearance is very important to her. In 1955 she married singer/actor Eddie Fisher. They have two children, Carrie Fisher and Todd Fisher. She and Eddie were divorced in 1959 after he ran off with actress Elizabeth Taylor. In 1960 Debbie married shoe store millionaire Harry Karl. They were divorced in 1973 after he lost all of their money. She and Richard Hamlett were married in 1984. They purchased the Paddlewheel Hotel in Las Vegas and turned it into the Debbie Reynolds Hollywood Hotel and Casino. At last she had a place to show off her collection of costumes, props and sets. Unfortunately the hotel and casino failed financially. Debbie and Richard were divorced in 1996. According to her official website, 'In 1997, she filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection. Her son, Todd, dropped his own career to help his mother. Debbie has mused that Todd is the only man who never left her.' Mars in Pisces reveals she is a pacifist who may give something up rather than fight for it. She does not have a strong ego drive for personal achievement or for winning at the expense of someone else. She can be quite happy in a supporting role, working for the benefit of others or for a cause she believes in. She has been an active supporter of the Girl Scouts of America since childhood and has helped support the Thalian Mental Health Clinic for emotionally disturbed children at Cedars-Sinai since the 1970s. Gentle and impressionable, she is motivated by less mundane and less tangible things than most people. She may have difficulty formulating clear, definite goals for herself and making her way in the world. She has many dreams, high ideals and a strong mystical or religious impulse. She also has a creative imagination and can successfully apply herself to art or music. She has a sensitive physique and needs to maintain good regular health habits in order build strength and stamina. Jupiter in Leo dictates that she cannot tolerate smallness or pettiness in any form and she has a tendency to exaggerate. She has a wonderful sense of drama. Debbie must live boldly and heroically, otherwise she feels she is simply existing and wasting her talents. The desire for personal recognition -- or even fame -- and a need to do something she feels proud of, motivate her strongly. She has an unusual capacity for fun and playfulness. According to her website, her solution to adversity is 'not to merely survive, but to constantly revive, renew and live life to the maximum.' |
