Courtney LoveCourtney Love This bleach-blonde Cancer is a lot more sensitive than she lets on. 'I'm not a woman, I'm a force of nature.' Courtney Michelle Harrison was born in San Francisco in the 'sixties. Her father, Hank Harrison was a Grateful Deadhead and her mother, Linda Caroll was a psychologist. Growing up, she lived in a number of hippie communes, which would seem to be the source of her stage name. However, her mother explains that she simply called her daughter 'Courtney, love' when she was a child, and it stuck. For school, she traveled abroad. She became a musician, playing briefly in Babes In Toyland, Sugar Babylon and Faith No More. She also created her own, mainly female band, Hole. She married Kurt Cobain of Nirvana fame in 1992, wearing an antique silk dress that once belonged to actress Frances Farmer. Their daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, was born in August of 1992. Two years later, Cobain killed himself. That same year Courtney put out Hole's second album, Live Through This. With her Sun in Cancer, Courtney Love has powerful emotional attachments to the past, her family, her childhood and the places she associates with safety and security. Maintaining a connection with her roots is very important to her. Loyal and sentimental, she tends to cling to whatever is dear to her. A strong need for a sense of belonging and acceptance means that she probably centers much of her life around her home. Kindness impresses her more than any sort of honor the world can bestow. She is highly emotional and her views are often dominated by her feelings and personal experiences, rather than reason or logic. It is difficult for Courtney to judge situations in an objective manner for her own sympathies and loyalties usually enter in. She takes things very personally and sometimes builds a wall around herself to protect herself from pain and rejection. She actually feels rather shy and vulnerable at heart. She also tends to be moody, experiencing frequent emotional ups and downs. She needs to have space in which to withdraw, dream and replenish herself; otherwise she can become cranky and unhappy with those around her. She functions in an instinctive, non-rational manner and likes to immerse herself in creative activities. She also has a great affinity for music, because it evokes and communicates emotions that may be difficult or impossible to put into words. Hole's CD, My Body, The Hand Grenade was dedicated to Kurt Cobain, as well as to former Hole bass player Kristen Pfaff, who was killed by a heroin overdose. Compassion, sensitivity and imagination are her strong points. Her faults include an inability to release the past and go forward, clannishness and intolerance, and a tendency to be self-pitying when she meets hardships in life. This comes through in many of her lyrics, as in the song 'Softer, Softest' from Live Through This: I've got a blister from touching everything I see The abyss opens up It steals everything from me. Another example is 'Jennifer's Body' from the same album: Bettering you, bettering me My better half has bitten me Bettering you, bettering me I'm sleeping with my enemy Myself Myself. With Sun sextile Jupiter Courtney's life is apt to be blessed with more than her share of helpful friends, fortuitous connections and doors opening to her at just the right time. For example, Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins helped produce her album, Celebrity Skin in 1998. Because she is usually willing to share and give back to others in a generous way, she continues to generate successes in her life no matter how unfortunate prevailing circumstances may be. She must beware, however, of becoming an opportunist. Sun trine Neptune means that she is imaginative and sensitive to anything colorful, beautiful or magical. She is attracted to artistic and creative endeavors, music and mysticism, and her spiritual values influence her approach to life. She is idealistic and perhaps impractical. With Sun conjunct Jupiter/Pluto she is capable of extraordinary physical or mental efforts to gain success and achieve something that will bring her recognition and respect. From childhood until her teenage years, Courtney studied ballet. As a result of injuries suffered during that time she has had numerous surgeries on her feet. Even so, her dancing talent is obvious in the film 'The People vs. Larry Flynt.' She has a strong need for authority and power over others and is likely to perform better in a lead role. Mercury in Leo makes her a person of strong opinions who expresses her views energetically and often dramatically. She is an amusing speaker who will exaggerate in order to get her point across. When asked what she'd be like when she got old, she quipped, 'Knowing me, I'd probably end up at a bar, asking some guy to get me another martini. Still bleaching my hair at 59.' She has an aptitude for storytelling and performing. Even if her arena is only the dining table, she puts on a good show. In the '90s, Hole was part of the 'Riot Girl' movement; in 2002, they disbanded. Her film career began with small parts in two Alex Cox films -- Sid and Nancy and Straight to Hell. She has an abundance of creative ideas and does not enjoy work in which she has no creative input. Mercury conjunct Venus/Pluto suggests that her sexuality probably developed early in life and problems of love could be on her mind a lot. She may adopt a somewhat showy and flirtatious way of speaking and the subject of sex may come up repeatedly in conversation and in her music. She is the inspiration for Nirvana's 'Heart-Shaped Box.' Uranus conjunct Neptune/N. Node says that she is inclined to be self-willed and could find it difficult to be a cooperative member of her community. At the same time she has a tendency to become upset over the anti-social behavior of others. Venus in Gemini promises that in love, she is more interested in a person's sense of humor and brainpower than in their physique. She needs lots of social stimulation, is quite a flirt, and likes to have many friends of both sexes. A possessive, jealous partner would be very stifling for Courtney. With Venus conjunct Mars she is extremely amorous and it is difficult for her to go without romantic involvement for very long. When she is attracted to someone, she pursues them very ardently and sometimes comes on too strong. Doing creative or artistic work can also satisfy the strong desire for love and beauty that she feels. In February of 2004 she put out a solo album, America's Sweetheart. Mars in Gemini makes her energetic, restless and forever on the go. Her active mind is always buzzing with ideas and she tends to live on nervous energy. She often scatters her energies in so many directions at once that she cannot follow through on all of them. Her drive is more mental than physical. She uses wit, intelligence and social sophistication to achieve her goals. Mars quincunx Neptune means that to accomplish all she is capable of, she needs to work on building up her physical energy, to exercise regularly and eat healthfully. She also may need more rest than the average person and she especially needs to avoid activities and people that waste her time. Mars square Pluto gives her a powerful will. When she wants something, she pursues it passionately and relentlessly until she achieves it. She may be so driven by her desire that she loses all objectivity. She often becomes compulsive, even obsessed, with achieving something, no matter what the cost or how hard she must work for it. Not surprisingly, Hole stands at Number 68 on VH1's list of the 100 Greatest Women in rock and roll. Her forcefulness may be veiled, for often she does not reveal her real intentions to others until they cross her. Intense power struggles and relationships with a strong dominance versus submissiveness theme are likely for Courtney. A perfect example can be found on, My Body, The Hand Grenade: He hit me and it felt like a kiss He hit me but it didn't hurt me He couldn't stand to hear me say That I'd been with someone new And when I told him I had been untrue He hit me and it felt like a kiss He hit me and I knew he loved me 'Cause if he didn't care for me I could have never made him mad He hit me and I was glad Baby won't you stay ... He hit me and it felt like a kiss He hit me and I knew I loved him 'Cause when he took me in his arms With all the tenderness there is He hit me and he made me glad Baby won't you stay .... Jupiter in Taurus means that material comfort, security and well-being are important to Courtney, and she is serious about financial matters. Her strengths are practicality, a love of the earth and an ability to take delight in the sensual pleasures of the natural world. With Saturn in Pisces she often has a sense of longing for something she cannot name, and may be both attracted and repelled by mysticism and parapsychology. She will need to work on overcoming fear, guilt, anxiety, loneliness and oversensitivity. In the song, 'Gutless,' she says: You can try to suck me dry But there's nothing left to suck Just you try to hold me down Come on, try to shut me up Step and fetch, grease my hips I don't even have to pause I don't really miss God But I sure miss Santa Claus. Saturn opposition Uranus causes her to seesaw between playing it safe, and doing something original, between self-control and letting loose, between being a responsible adult and a rebellious adolescent, between what she has to do and what her spontaneous impulses tell her. All of this creates enormous inner tension as well as friction with people in her environment. She may, for instance, bitterly resent the government or authority figures who 'crush her individuality,' and yet ignore her obligations and responsibilities, thus ensuring that they will come down on her. In an August, 2004 interview in Seventeen Magazine, she said, 'Being famous is just like being in high school. But I'm not interested in being the cheerleader. I'm not interested in being Gwen Stefani. She's the cheerleader, and I'm out in the smoker shed. And plenty of you are out there in the smoker shed, too ....' |
