Born Colin James Farrell in Dublin, Ireland, to Rita Monaghan Farrell and Irish football player Eamon Farrell, Colin has one older brother, Eamon Jr. and two older sisters, Catherine and Claudine.

He studied acting at the Gaiety School of Drama in Dublin, but his professional acting career began taking off and he left school.
