In 1997 Barack Obama was elected to the Illinois State Senate, serving until 2004. According to his campaign bio, 'this meant working with both Democrats and Republicans to help working families get ahead by creating programs like the state Earned Income Tax Credit, which in three years provided over $100 million in tax cuts to families across the state.' In 2005 he was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat from Illinois. Here, his first law 'was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent.' Barack has written two books -- his autobiography, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance and The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream.

His inspiring keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention catapulted him to front-runner status in the 2008 presidential campaign. 'There's not a liberal America and a conservative America,' he declared. 'There's the United States of America. We worship an awesome God in the blue states and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the red states. We coach Little League in the blue states and have gay friends in the red states. There are patriots who opposed the war and patriots who supported it. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the Stars and Stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.'

'It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to where we are today,' says Barack, 'but we have just begun. Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today.'
