Annie Lennox

Annie Lennox
December 25, 1954
Aberdeen, Scotland

This triple Capricorn, with Sun, Moon and Mercury in the sign of the Goat, has dedicated her award-winning talent to helping others.

'Looking around at what human beings have done in terms of abuse to themselves and each other and to the planet, it's just horrendous.'

Ann Griselda Lennox was a special Christmas present for Dorothy and Tom Lennox of Aberdeen, Scotland. At the tender age of four, Annie became a student at Aberdeen High School for Girls. Her artistic talents emerged early and she excelled at drawing, poetry and music. With a four-octave voice, she began attending the Royal Academy of Music in London at age seventeen. Although she trained in classical music at the Academy, she eventually dropped her studies in favor of a career in pop music. In London she met and became romantically involved with musician David A. Stewart. As dedicated artists, they decided to sacrifice their personal relationship in order to concentrate on musical collaboration. In 1977 they teamed up with folk singer-songwriter Pete Coombes and became The Tourists, with Annie as lead singer and David on vocals and guitar. In 1980 Annie and David left The Tourists to put together their world-famous duo, Eurythmics. They put out their first album In the Garden in 1981. In 1983 they made Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) and Touch, followed by six more including 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother), Be Yourself Tonight, Revenge, Savage and We Too Are One. In 1987 Eurythmics' song 'Missionary Man' won a Grammy.

On the personal side, Annie married Radha Raman, a Hare Krishna monk, in 1984. They divorced a year later. She and Israeli film and music producer Uri Fruchtmann tied the knot in 1988. They had two daughters, Lola and Tali, and divorced twelve years later. In 1990 Annie left Eurythmics and stepped up her charity work for causes like homelessness and AIDS awareness. She also continued a highly successful solo career. Between 1992 and 2007 she put out several albums including Diva, Medusa, Bare and the rather dark Songs of Mass Destruction. 'The world is a dark place,' she explained. 'It's fraught, it's turbulent. Most people's lives are underscored with dramas of all kinds: there's ups, there's downs -- the flickering candle. Half the people are drinking or drugging themselves to numb it. A lot of people are in pain.' A bright spot on the album, however, is 'Sing,' inspired by Nelson Mandela's AIDS charity concerts and Treatment Action Campaign, 'Sing' is Annie's collaboration with some of the best female artists in the business, including Gladys Knight, Madonna, Pink, Fergie, Angelique Kidjo, Shingai Shoniwa and The Generics -- the T.A.C. activists who inspired Annie to record 'Sing' and make the amazing video that goes with it.

Annie has won a load of awards during her career. She took home the British Phonographic Industry Award (aka The Brit) for Best British Female Solo Artist in 1984, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1993 and l996. In 1992 she won a Grammy for 'Diva' and another in 1995 for 'No More I Love You's.' In 1993 she won both Best British Female Solo Artist and Best British Album for Diva. In 1999 she and David put Eurythmics back together and put out an album called Peace. The Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to the British Music Industry went to Eurythmics that year for Peace. All the profits from their 1999 Peacetour were contributed to Amnesty International and Greenpeace. Also in 1999, as the Greatest White Soul Singer Alive, Annie snagged the Number 9 slot on VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll. In 2002 she received the Billboard Century Award. As the eleventh musician to win this award, she shares the honor with the likes of George Harrison, Carlos Santana, Emmylou Harris, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell. In 2004 she scored a Grammy and an Oscar with 'Into the West,' and in November of 2005, Eurythmics were inducted into the British Music Hall of Fame.

Sun in Capricorn tells us Annie is disciplined and quietly ambitious. She is driven to prove herself and to achieve success. Her work, her standing in the world and her contributions to society are very important to her. She will persevere through enormous hardship in order to reach a goal and often sacrifices much in the area of home life to do so. She does not readily show her inner feelings and always seems to be in control. Capable, efficient and strong, she is highly conscientious and even as a child possessed worldly wisdom. A practical dreamer, she feels that the ultimate test of a concept is its usefulness. She has an innate shrewdness and business sense and there is a bit of the cynic in her as well. Often she is authoritarian -- strictly fair, but without mercy. With a great respect for tradition, she plays by the rules. She can be overly self-critical. Giving herself permission to be spontaneous and silly, or weak and vulnerable, isn't easy for her.

Sun conjunct Moon means she generally knows what she wants and what will make her happy. With Sun conjunct Moon/Mercury her mind is very active and her judgment usually is sound. Although her thinking is influenced by her feelings, she is inclined to think in realistic terms. She is in control of her feelings and is able to express them rationally. Sun conjunct Moon in the Midheaven tells us her emotions are in tune with her intentions and she goes about her business with complete oneness. She has a positive attitude towards life and a high spirit of enterprise. Sun conjunct Mercury in the Midheaven suggests she has a harmonious balance between her body, mind and spirit. Sun conjunct N. Node/Midheaven shows that maintaining contact with her friends and associates is very important to her. Her friends are likely to be very supportive in everything she does.

Moon in Capricorn reiterates Annie is serious and responsible. She tries to carry the world on her shoulders and rarely lets others know when she needs help. She may ignore her own emotional needs, fearing others will not accept her if she appears weak. She is especially uncomfortable with emotional dependency. She may appear hard-nosed and tough, with a businesslike attitude toward her personal life, but no one is a truer friend. While her feelings and loyalties run deep, she often does not let people know how much she cares. Moon in the 10th house shows she works well with the public and has an instinct for what they want and will respond to. Providing and caring for others in a professional capacity makes her happy. A perfect example is her collaboration with The Generics on 'Sing!'

If it weren't already obvious, Moon conjunct Sun/N. Node lets us know Annie is very compassionate and loves to share her music with others. She is always in search of new friends for she enjoys working with them.

Aries rising says she meets life head-on and throws herself into new experiences. She is assertive and aboveboard in all her dealings. She projects a confident and sometimes arrogant appearance to others. She is self-reliant and doesn't depend upon approval. She likes to be original and does not mind going it alone.

Annie thrives on freedom, challenge and action. She tends to be somewhat simplistic in her outlook, which enables her to act in a very decisive manner. When inspired, she feels such a sense of excitement about it that she may charge ahead and implement it in a bold but poorly planned way. Patience and careful attention to details are not her forte. However, she never accepts defeat and will have brilliant and unprecedented successes, as well as painful failures. To her it is far better to make mistakes than it is to play it safe and never try. She is scornful of what she sees as passivity in others and also of the human tendency to imitate and follow. She is not a follower.
