Amy WinehouseAmy Winehouse This Virgin has been called the Mick Jagger of the new millennium. 'I told ya, I was trouble.' Amy Jade Winehouse was born in a northern borough of Greater London called Southgate. She shared two jazz-loving parents, Janis and Mitchell, with her brother Alex. As it turns out, Amy, Janis and Alex also shared Mitchell with his mistress, which he admits may have 'ruined her childhood.' She went to Southgate School and Ashmole School, both in Southgate. At age ten she and childhood pal Juliette Ashby put together a rap group called Sweet 'n' Sour. At twelve she began studying at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but got bounced two years later just for being her bad little self. Next, it was on to the London School for Performing Arts and Technology, also known as The Brit School, where her name now appears at the top of their online alumni list. Amy's first album, Frank, dropped in 2003 and the British Academy (1,000 specially invited industry members) nominated her for two Brit Awards. The album went platinum and in 2004 Amy got the nod for a Mercury Music Award by the British Association of Record Dealers, the self-proclaimed alternative to the 'industry-dominated' Brits. She also won the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters' celebrated 'Ivor' Award for Best Contemporary Song (musically and lyrically) for 'Stronger than Me.' Her second album, Back to Black, climbed to the Number One spot on the British Albums Chart in 2006 and garnered her five Grammys for 2007: Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album; and Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance -- all for her catchy anthem of denial, 'Rehab.' She also won the Brit for Best Female Solo Artist and an 'Ivor' for Best Contemporary Song, for 'Rehab.' Amy performed the show finale at The Brits with her aching 'Love Is a Losing Game.' She has rocked out onstage with The Rolling Stones. Sir Paul McCartney wants her to do the theme song for the next Bond flick, Quantum of Solace. And she achieved all of this by age 24 while battling serious personal demons that have indeed landed her in rehab. Sun in Virgo tells us at heart Amy is humble and not particularly interested in a position of power. She prefers to kick back in a silk kimono and study life from a distance. With a keen eye for detail, she can be relied upon to be thorough in her work. She takes enormous pride in a job well done. What she may lack in self-confidence she makes up for in skill. Meticulous attention to detail and careful craftsmanship are her forte. However, she can be extremely critical if things are not done the way she wants, and she can be brutally self-critical, as well. In her environment and in herself, she focuses on the flaws, always wanting to refine and perfect. She is highly discriminating and may be particular about her diet, hygiene and health habits. She can be difficult to live with at times because of her sensitivity and her quirks. She may seem cool and self-contained, but she actually has a very compassionate nature and enjoys serving others. Although she can be too serious at times, she is quietly devoted to the people and causes she cares about -- like the neighborhood campaign she's involved in to save a popular indie film location adjacent to the George Tavern in London's East End. Sun conjunct Mercury suggests she may only see things from her own point of view. She enjoys talking but listening isn't her forte. She has a clear mind, loves learning and needs constant mental stimulation. Sun square Moon means she often feels that she is at cross-purposes with herself, for her conscious intentions conflict with her subconscious emotional needs. This comes out in many of her songs. I cheated myself Amy is pulled in two different directions by the planets, which manifests in her public persona as a conflict between creative success and personal turmoil. She has difficulty satisfying both her need to be an individual and her need for caring relationships and a sense of belonging. Moon in Sagittarius makes her open and generous. She enjoys a wide circle of friends and collaborators, and thrives on conviviality. She is adventurous, playful, freedom-loving and always ready for a good time. She rarely allows difficulties to keep her down. No matter how bleak the past or present, she always expects a better, brighter future. In fact, she is uncomfortable with her own and other people's emotional pain, which may be one of the reasons behind her stubborn 'No, no, no' to rehab. The man said, 'Why do you think you here?' She often tries to offer philosophical advice to those who are hurting, but unwittingly ignores the feelings involved. For instance, although friendship means a great deal to her, she may not be fully aware of her friends' feelings about her risk of overdosing like jazz musician Donny Hathaway. I'd rather be at home with Ray To find true happiness, Amy needs a mate who will be her best friend and encourage her aspirations and ideals. She also needs a great deal of emotional freedom and mobility. Moon in the 2nd house makes her likely to be a collector, for her belongings give her a sense of security and continuity with the past, which is important to her. Antiques or things with sentimental value are especially dear to her. With Moon trine Venus she feels that daily acts of caring are essential to the success of a relationship and she knows how to make others feel accepted and cherished. She enjoys good relationships with women. Moon trine Mars means she is assertive and confronts difficulties in a direct, no-nonsense way. She cannot tolerate self-pity and can be rather brusque with others' emotional problems. Although she can be somewhat confrontational, she also has an urge to avoid conflict. This may mellow her fiery reactions a bit, or she may seesaw between the two. Moon conjunct Neptune makes her a sensitive soul, a dreamer, very much attuned to the realm of imagination and fantasy. She often retreats into her own inner world to escape the harshness of the 'real world.' Gentle and sometimes even passive, she will not fight or assert herself, even when she needs to. This comes across in many of her songs as well. I don't know why I got so attached. Amy is very sympathetic and somewhat naive emotionally. She must guard against being taken advantage of. Moon sextile Pluto gives her very deep feelings and profound attachments to people she cares about. She and Blake Fielder-Civil were married in May of 2007. Their tempestuous union has been the inspiration of many songs, if not whole albums, as well as fodder for endless tabloid headlines. Her relationship to her mother and other females in her life is apt to be incredibly close and intense, as well. She may be easily manipulated, when it comes to one of these important relationships, because she's so emotionally invested in it. Scorpio rising means she is very strong-willed and proud, but intensely secretive. Behind her quiet exterior lies a great deal of emotional complexity and fierce determination. When she wants something she goes after it calmly but wholeheartedly, and she usually gets it. She is not one to live superficially. She wants to live passionately and intensely and is not afraid to face danger or the darker side of life -- human pain and struggle. She functions well in crisis situations and may actually seek them out, for she enjoys the feeling of living at full capacity. In apparent contradiction to her Moon sign, she can be very intuitive about other people and especially about their unspoken feelings and hidden motives. She has strong gut reactions which usually prove correct. She approaches life instinctively and is not always fully conscious of why she feels or acts as she does. In relating to others, she is cautious, sometimes even suspicious, until she gets to know and trust someone. Trust does not come easily to her. When she commits herself emotionally, she is intensely devoted and expects the same kind of undying loyalty in return. If she is ever betrayed by someone she cares deeply for, she is capable of hating and retaliating with as much fervor as she once loved. Nothing is done halfway. In fact, she is powerfully involved and often jealously attached to whatever she cares about, be it person, idea or cause. There is definitely a streak of emotional fanaticism in her. She is self-protective and often defensive. She is also very magnetic, especially to members of the opposite sex. Mars square her ascendant means at times her feisty spirit and aggressiveness get her into trouble. She may be viewed as a troublemaker, an upstart with little concern for others. She would do well to moderate her temper to avoid friction with those around her. Sun sextile her ascendant tells us she gets by in life almost by personality alone. There is a radiant, warmhearted, attractive quality about her that others can't help responding to favorably. Usually she appears confident and clear about who she is, and it's difficult not to notice her or feel her influence when she is around. Her ascendant conjunct Jupiter/Pluto makes her a born leader who wants to have control of her environment. Far-sighted and practical, she has the ability to organize projects. Personal and public success are likely to be hers. Just to prove the point, Amy is the first British female artist to win 5 Grammys in one night. Not many can claim to be Keith Richards' and Mick Jagger's favorite modern artist, or rather, the only new artist they consider worth a listen. Says Richards, 'There's only one -- that girl Amy. Mind you, that girl isn't going to be around long unless she sorts herself out pretty quick. Amy's got to get smart. I'm not a preacher. But I've been there and you have to pass it on.' Her ascendant conjunct Saturn/Uranus means at times she may feel that she is all alone in the world. She has a strong desire to free herself from her stressful surroundings -- one more possible reason behind her problems with substance abuse. Ascendant conjunct Uranus/Pluto makes her likely to live in an unusual environment. She needs her freedom and has a strong desire to exceed her limits. With the likes of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney all pulling for her, she's got a better-than-even chance. |
