Alan Keyes

Alan Keyes
August 7, 1950
New York, New York

Sun: Leo
Moon: Gemini
Rising: Libra

This Lion is a descendant of slaves who now believes that any form of income tax is 'tax-slavery.'

'We must abolish the income tax and replace it with the tax system that was intended by our Founders when this nation began -- a tax system that leaves our people in control of 100 percent of their dollars, and that gives to the earner the first use of every dollar that he or she earns.'

Republican Alan Keyes interrupted his doctoral studies at Harvard University to join the State Department under his mentor, UN Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick. In 1979 he was stationed in India. In 1983 he became Ambassador to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations under President Reagan. He was Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from 1985 to 1987. He ran for the U.S. Senate from Maryland in 1988 and 1992, and from Illinois in 2004. In 1994 he began hosting a syndicated radio show called The Alan Keyes Show: America's Wake-Up Call. In 2002, he hosted a live television commentary show, Alan Keyes is Making Sense, on MSNBC. He is pro-life and pro-family. He wrote a book called Masters of the Dream: The Strength and Betrayal of Black America. He also ran for president in 1996 and 2000.

A Sun in Leo guarantees that he is proud. He wants to stand out and be recognized. He must put his personal stamp on everything he does. He needs to have a place where he can express himself creatively and be in charge. For Keyes, it is true that 'all the world's a stage' and he wants to be the hero in the play. He wants to receive the love and applause of an adoring audience, even if the 'audience' is just one special person. Though he appears fiercely self-assured and confident, he is actually quite dependent on the affirmation and love of others.

As a Leo, Keyes is very romantic and knows how to make the person he loves feel special. Immensely loyal, he will defend his loved ones and stand by them to the end -- as long as they never betray his trust. However, he likes to be the strong one in a relationship and does not share the leading role easily. He needs a person who is as strong-willed as he is, but who will not try to dominate or compete with him. In 1981 he married Jocelyn Marcel, an East Indian-American, whom he met while stationed in Bombay. They have three children: Francis, Maya and Andrew. His strengths are his zest for life, his creative power and his warm and generous heart. His primary fault is his tendency to be so concerned with his own creative self-expression that he may forget there is another, larger world that does not revolve around him. With Sun in the 10th house, career, reputation and public image are very important to him and he may undervalue the personal side of life.

His Moon in Gemini says that, in contrast to previous elements in his chart, he can be unaware of his own or other people's deeper feelings and emotional needs. Emotional outbursts bewilder him. He would rather settle differences by talking things out rationally. With Moon square Jupiter he has a cheerful disposition and reaches out to others in a warm, friendly way. His lack of pettiness is well known among his friends and people often seek him out for advice.

A Libra rising means he is a natural diplomat. He is reasonable, tolerant, fair and always willing to listen to the other side of an issue. Even if he strongly disagrees with someone, he will try to find points of agreement rather than emphasizing the differences. His need to create harmony extends to his physical environment and personal appearance. He does everything with a sense of style and art. He also feels that relationships are an art. Marriage and having the right person to share his life with are tremendously important to him.

Mars conjunct ascendant in Libra says assertiveness and confrontation are very much part of his approach to life. Waiting for someone else to make the first move is not his style. Though he values harmony and pleasantness, he often feels that others are not cooperating with him or are trying to control him. Others feel that he demands too much from them. Surprisingly, he is often perceived as a troublemaker, even when his intention is to help.
